Smile 87 Hurricane 1000/Fuel Pump

Ever since I bought this bike 3 yrs. ago off of ebay it`s been a pain in the *** to start. When I received it it would start w/full choke but wouldn`t stay running. Eventually I got it running and there were clearly carb problems. Next spring after $1900.00 to my local Honda dealer for complete carb rebuild, master cylinder and slave cylinder rebuild and new fork seals I ran great but still was a bitch to start. This year it died a few times and wouldn`t stay running. We have a former intern, now a real engineer who is into fixing computers and older bikes. As a last resort I asked him to take the bike and try to figure out was was wrong. Bike also ran very rich and got lousy gas mileage and had some vibration over 4000 RPM.
Andy disassembled the carbs and found the jets were the Ca. jets, main reason for the bike running rich. after much fiddling he determined the fuel pump was dying. New pump and he re calibrated the counterbalancer for 5000RPM. Bike starts every morning without the choke and is much smoother at 5000 RPM. He flushed the radiator and new anti-freeze. Total bill $180.00 which included the pump. Kids a friggin genius.
