Default 88 1000F Hurricane fuel pump question

I'm trying to get my buddy's fathers 88 'Cane running and it looks like I'm on the home stretch. Rebuilt the carbs, replaced fuel hoses, replaced leaking carb/manifold boots, replaced fuel filter.

It runs a lot better than it did, but still stalls when trying to get it to idle under 2000 RPM, and starts to sputter when holding it over 6-7000 RPM.

I pulled the hose off the output of the fuel pump and fuel is moving, but kinda 'spurty'. The pump clicks and pumps about once a second. As far as I know, this is wrong, Shouldnt it be a constant buzz? Just making sure, since I'm used to automotive pumps, havent messed much with bike pumps. The pump on my 95 F3 runs so well, you cant even feel it doing anything.

Do a search here. Some guys, I believe, have removed their fuel pumps entirely, since the later models don't have fuel pumps.

My fuel pump failed on my 88 I took it out and left it out and I think it runs better without it.
