Default Why swap axle orientation?

Why is it common on a track/race bike to swap the orientation of the rear axle so the nut is on the left side of the swing arm instead of on the right side the way it came from the factory? I have been told it makes wheel/tire changes easier, but I haven't found anyone that can tell me why that would make the job easier. Any insight? Thanks.

By not pulling the axle all the way out helps hold the caliper bracket in place when the wheel is being changed.
