Hi all, got a simple questin.I just cleaned & lubed my chain, (i used Dupont silcone spray).just want to know how many miles untill i need to lube it again?

 

Depends. I would say a good place to start, if you're using decent chain lube, would be 500 miles. But you need to keep an eye on it. If you're riding in dusty, dirty or wet conditions you may want to lube more often. Some people really go crazy with chain lube, say ever couple hundred miles. IMO that's way too much.

 

as said, it all depends. I try to lube mine every 500-1000 miles, but I inspect it before each ride. If it looks dry, I lube it. Also, I clean it whenever it begins to look dirty, I don't have a set mileage for cleaning.

However, I've never heard of using silicone spray for a lube on a chain. Im not sure I would be comfortable with it as silicone sprays will dry up rather fast and the heat from the chain will more than likely make it dry up that much faster. Silicone is a good protectant for o-rings, but you need to have a lube for the rollers of the chain. I don't think the silicone would sink into the rollers like an actual chain lube would. i would suggest buying a proper lube.

I use a product called chain guard. I really like it, as it really gets into the rollers, but most people here do not like it. Most people here use chain wax. Just go down to your local motorcycle shop and ask for either one by name, they should have it. I think they are both made by the same company. If you do use chain guard, use it sparingly and only apply it to the inside of the chain after the chain has been warmed up from a ride. If you use a lot of it, it will fling off all over your wheel and undertail.

If you like Dupont, they do make a Teflon Multi-Use Dry Wax Lubricant, perfect for chains (o-ring safe) & cheap.
