Default Wheel removal and strip down for spraying/powder coating

Hi, i need to get my 1998 CBR900RR's wheels repainted/plastic coated as they are in poor condition. I need to remove the wheels and get them down to bare rims before taking them to the refurbers.

Im not sure whether to get the tyres removed by a tyre shop or do em myself. So i could do with some basic info of how to safely remove the wheels, tyres, discs and bearings etc to give me just the rims.

Once the wheels have been repainted i will get a tyre fitter to put the tyres back on incl a new rear tyre to make sure i dont damage the new finish... but, am i best adding new bearings at the same time? current ones seem fine but not sure if they have to be replaced once removed?

On previous bikes ive just let bike shops do the bizz when it get it serviced n mot'd so this is the first time ive removed and played with wheels myself...

Any help or step by step guide will be appreciated.. many thanks

How much life is left on the tires? You might find that for the price of getting them taken off by a shop it isn't worth it based on the tread life on your tires.

If you're doing the work, you'll want a set of (quality) stands for the front and back. I also assume you're getting the wheels powder coated and not plastic coated? I've never heard of plastic coating a wheel, although I may just be uneducated!

Unless you have experience removing tires from wheels, let a shop do it. Have them remove the bearings at the same time.

Your bearings may still be in good condition but since you'll have them off & the wheel stripped, it might be a good idea to go ahead & replace them when the work is done. Its some good preventative maintenance. Just have the shop replace them when you have the new tires mounted. Then, really will be like brand new wheels.

Good luck.
