What is wrong with my bike?
I have a 2001 F4i and have moved from greensboro NC to great falls MT. My bike was working great before we moved.I had to drain the gas tank of fuel and unhook the battery from the bike. When I drained the tank I unbolted it and unhooked the fuel line to drain it. A moving company moved it and it took about a month to get here. When it got here it was straped down in a crate. I hooked the battery back up and put fuel in it. I started it up and it runs fine and I can throttle is up and it idles fine. The problem though is that when I put it in gear and start to release the clutch to go the motor cuts out. It doesnt lunge forward and ever act like it wants to go I think it is electrical problem because it completey cuts out without trying to go and i even throttle up my revs and let the clutch out and it just shuts down. I checked the clutch switch and it is good. I also checked the wires going into the clutch switch for a break and they are good. I also checked the side stand switch and it is good also. What am I missing I am thinking it has to be something simply but what am i missing. I hope the change in altitude hasnt done anything to it but I have no idea at the point please help!!!
I would have suggested the side-stand and/or the nuetral indicator switch, but it
sounds like you've got those covered. The symptoms really point to those areas,
as the issue.
If your bike has the "tip/fall" sensor, maybe it needs to be reset? However,
I thought the sensor prevents the engine from even starting.
Possibly, worth looking in to...
After that, it's time to do the "harness crawl". Start at the battery and chase every run,
looking for frays/damaged/broken wiring and/or a loose/bad connector.
While you're at it, pack all of the connectors with di-electric grease.
The bonus there...that will ensure good conduction and prevent future corrosion.
It also assures you that your harness is in good shape. Even if it doesn't fix the problem, it's time that's well spent.
Good luck, Ern
