Question Weird engine noise, maybe you can help

I have an 06 600RR. Its my first bike and i have had it about 6 months so Im still learning a lot about it as I keep up maintenance.

To get to the point, there is a weird noise that seems to be coming from the engine (13,500 miles on it). I have been told by a friend that it could be the cam chain tensioner, but they don't really know for sure, so thats my guess so far but I'm not sure if thats it or how to fix it. To try to describe the noise it sounds like your dragging a chain over a piece of pipe; that and it usually only does it at the top end of gear, usually in 2nd and 3rd for the most part around 3-6000 rpm.

Any guesses or solutions are appreciated.

Most people describe it as a "can of BBs rattling around" (the CCTL failure). Its really not a big deal, more annoying than anything.

The cam chain tensioner is on the right hand side of the engine as you're sitting on the bike. You can usually tell a difference in volume if you put your ear to the left or right side of the bike. Even lowering the idle can make the noise more obvious if it's a CCT. It will make noise below 5000rpm and then it will go away as rpm increases. These bikes have a problem with them!!! Very common issue. I replaced many at the dealership!!

What kind of $$ are we talking about to fix the problem? Just dropped a lot of money into it; kind of on a budget. You also say its more annoying than anything(skoobydoobie); if its not replaced, will there be future physical problems? or will the noise just stay and annoy the **** out of me without probs?

Getting an aftermarket cct will run about $50, with Ape manual cct being the pick of choice. Dunno how much an OEM runs.

People say there's no ill effect to the cct failing. That doesn't track logically to me. I mean we don't ride our bikes with the drive chain not properly tensioned for a number of reasons. But I don't believe it's an immediate concern either.

The OEM ones run a little more , like 60-65 bucks.
