Default Variable drive chain tension???

I have a 1991 CBR600F2. It is impossible to adjust the chain. It varies from TIGHT to 1.5" of free play as you rotate the rear wheel. What does this mean? Must I replace the chain? If I do, must I replace the chain & sprokets as a set? TAI...

generally, that means your chain is shot. If the rollers roll freely and there isnt a lot of side to side lash, you get away with just lubing the chain.

If the chain is found to be bad, replace the chain along with sprockets as a set. You dont want a new chain on an old set of sprockets.

How are you checking the tension? Is the bikes rear wheel off the ground? or is the bikes wheel on the ground?
