Variable drive chain tension???

generally, that means your chain is shot. If the rollers roll freely and there isnt a lot of side to side lash, you get away with just lubing the chain.
If the chain is found to be bad, replace the chain along with sprockets as a set. You dont want a new chain on an old set of sprockets.
How are you checking the tension? Is the bikes rear wheel off the ground? or is the bikes wheel on the ground?
