Valve Experts - Advise Needed
Question: At 24k, my intake valves have .002"-.005" clearance, while my exhaust valves are spot on at .011". What could be going on that the intakes are so tight already?
Story: I took my bike to the dealer today for a valve adjustment (first time ever being at the dealer since Ive had the bike) and they told me a few funny things.
First, a few reasons why I already think these guys are idiots. They broke the airbox plug on my injector harness, and told me that my timing cover was stripped at the bolt head to remove it. While I know that it wasn't before I took it there, they claimed that since it was my fault I would need to buy a new cover. I saved myself the arguing since its only $12, but made sure that they would cover the $75 injector harness, which they will. So I already say to myself, "What are these guys doing with my bike?", and then I ask about the valve clearances.
They claimed that both my #1 intake valves had 0 clearance, and one of my #3 intake valves had 0 clearance. The rest of the intakes were at .003"-.005", while all of the exhausts were spot on at .011" except for #4, which was .008" and .010". They said that they didn't want to shim it because the shim would be too small and could damage the valve seat (I think thats what they said would get damaged, but I don't remember exactly what their reason was). So, they wanted to tear apart the head and rebuild the whole thing. I told them to pretty much not touch anything else and I would come pick it up.
I bring the bike home and check the valves myself. #1 has .002" of clearance on both valves and the #3 valve supposedly at 0 was actually at .003". All of the other measurements are pretty accurate, and the #4 exhausts are both at .010", still in spec.
So, whats going on here? Why are my valves so tight at 24k? I don't abuse my bike and maintain it very well, so it's puzzling me. I already figured out the shims I need, and at 190 through 195, I don't see how these could be too small as the dealer claims.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Was the bike done stone cold. I take my bike in the day before so it's left over night for valve adjustment on a cold motor. Seriously, even a slightly warm donk can throw the clearance check. Pick you're bike up & find someone who seems to know what their doing.
I have found that dealership workshops are only good for warranty stuff & maybe an oil change, they always seem to have someone new running the workshop & they just don't give a rat's about whether you are a satisfied customer or not.
I have found a great bike shop, both mechanics are bike riders & have a solid rep. So do what I did. Ask around in you're area, other bike owners will set you on the right path.

The bike was stone cold for both their check and mine. I changed out the shims last night, and now all the valves are in spec. I will have to check the compression and possibly do a leakdown check today to see if there's any problems with the valves.
