Default Valve check question

Why do you have to tighten the cam chain tensioner all the way down just to check the valve lash?

on which bike? on the f4i no (or any other with the shim style). if you have the screw and locknut you'll get diff preferance answers. i prefer to set everything with the chain loose and recheck after i tighten the chain (usually no change at all).

It is on an F3, and I also cannot get any feeler gauges into the intake side, I can only get them in on the exhaust side and they seem to be in spec so far. Anyone have any ideas what might be wrong, I have the pulse generator set right, and I have the intake and exhaust marks facing away from each other, I am really confused, I would not think they would be wore to where they are open all the time with only 17k miles.

ok, you SHOULD have to turn the motor to go from checking int to exh but im not positive on your bike. but they wouldnt wear to stay open, wear would cause them to stay closed and the guage would be loose. you do know the int and exh have two diff specs right? no pun intended just wanna be sure.

I have the manual in front of me, I was talking to the shop since there is basically no valve clearance on the intake, and yes, I did it right, cam chain tightened, t mark lined up, in on on side ex on another with them in opposite directions, about the biggest I managed to fit was a thousandth and a half. The bike probably had wore out valves since the air filter was ignored and never oiled by the previous owner.
