Default tread wear

how low can the tread go down before replacing a tire? Is it bad to mix and match tire brands? When replacing tires, do you need to replace both at the same time? what do you guys pay to mount and balance tires on your bikes? sorry, i'm new to this.

Depends.... I replaced my rear tire before a big trip, not because it needed it at that moment, but because I expected it would soon and didn't want to deal with it on the trip. But if you're down to the wear bars, it needs to go. Or if you've flatted and plugged it, or if it just looks bad.

Bought the tire at my local Cycle Gear store, they matched the OEM with a compatible tire, then after the trip (7,000 miles) I replaced the front to match. Cost $15 to mount and balance each tire. Now I need to do the back again!

If you think it's too low, just replace it. A blown tire on a bike is a trickier thing to deal with then that on a car (can't just pull a spare out of the underseat).
I've read it's bad to mix and match, and I avoid doing so. Plus it just looks bad.

I paid $50 for mounting and balance, front and rear.
