Default Tire - life expectency

I don't ride my bike too hard and my bike is approaching the 4500 mile marker. What is the general role on tire replacement? When do you know you need a new tire apart from apparent blow-ups. Is it strickly miles, years or combination?

Thanks,

You have TWI (tread wear indicators) marks on the tires. You will find them on the sidewall area usually in the form of a triangle or arrow. The mark the location of where little bumps of rubber are embedded in the tread design. So when you find the mark on the sidewall, trace the tread design across the tire. They space the TWIs from the middle to the sides so you have a gauge for all of the tread not just one section. It's time to buy new tires when the little bump of rubber is flush with the rest of the tire.

Make sense?

I'm looking for a link with pictures

I did forget to mention... age is a part of it too. There is a date code on the side of the tire. It's two digit for the week with two more for the year. So if you see 0107, that means the tire was made the first week of 07, 5207 means it's the last week of 07. Look for any dr rot or other damage as well.

its pretty simple to tell when you need new tires just by giving them a glance, as Collins already said. you can just tell, by looking at them that they need to be replaced. i got 10k miles out of my last set of PP's and i will prob get slightly more out of my new set.

lmao, idk if i'd keep my bike if i only got single digits!!!! during the summer, im pretty hard on the tires too (for my skill level, i'd like to think). i also carried a passanger (my g/f before she got a bike) on that set. so i should get slightly more out of my new set.
