the bike is a mix of years of cbr 900rr's and i think all the rear swing arms are the same size. but i want to max out the tire width

I don't know your intentions with the bike, so I'll save the talk about the consequences of changing tire sizes, just be sure you do some research on the effects it will cause to your bike.
Having said that, it depends on your rim width, and the width of your swingarm. But, a 190-50-17 is probably the largest tire you can fit on that bike without modifications. Unless you have a wider rim than was factory, then it all depends on how much room you have on each side of the tire now.

Without seeing your bike in detail as far as what is stock and what has been changed , it is a bit hard to say what tire will fit ..
Take justasquid's advice and look up all the effects of going over sized on the rear only before you do anything ..
Then if you decide to go for a non stock up size , take your CBR to a shop and measure the tires for fit before you buy them ..
I know some guys are into these sorts of things for the look .... and thats up to you , but you should be thinking of handling before looks ...
