Default throttle cable free play?

When I picked up my 92 F2 project, the throttle worked, but had a good bit of play, and a bit of drag when you released the throttle, wouldn't snap back with authority, you had to move it back closed if you wanted the throttle to close quickly.

I installed a new set of Motion Control cables, and adjusted all of the cable adjusters @ the carb screwed all the way in and locked down with the locknuts. The cable ends are seated properly around the pulley.

At the throttle, everything is seated, and the cable ends are installed into the housing. The cable w/ the adjuster is screwed into the housing with 3-4 threads exposed below the throttle for the locknut to be threaded on. The in-line adjuster on this cable is screwed all the way in towards the throttle housing, to create the shortest possible housing distance from anchor point to anchor point.

so - the way I see it, I should have as much slack as possible in the cable, but I have zero free play.

Is this a function of the new cables having no stretch at all on them? Also, I can't attempt to start the bike due to the tank not being installed, is it possible my idle adjustment screw has gotten turned and backed out too much, allowing the butterflies to fully close instead of being cracked however much they normally were for a decent idle?

this happened to me the first time i removed my carbs man. it took me like 4 hours to finally figure out how to adjust them properly. you just gotta keep messing with them until they snap back the way they are supposed to.

i just tightened the nut and screw as much as i could when connecting the cables to the carbs.

goodluck i knowhow frustrating it is

ahh - i have the snap-back now since swapping the cables, just no free-play at the grip. specs say there should be a little slack before the carbs start opening, and m ine dont.

I think I can adjust one thing, but I'll have to wait til I get back from vacation to try.

follow the cables right from the throttle grip. shortly after there is a freeplay adjuster just tighten it all the way for minimum freeplay, or loosen it all the way for maximum freeplay. it could be the opposite but thats where it is.

turn the handlebars all the way to one side and open the throttle make sure it snaps back do the same for the other side. otherwise u might kill yourself on a turn when ur throttle sticks

well, I went on vacation for a week and thought about this while I was laying on the beach admiring the oil-slick.

Only thing I could come up with was that the cable housing I had was slightly longer than the original, and that I might have not gotten it adjusted all the way to the stops @ the carb bracket.

I pulled the airbox back off and found everything stil seated properly, and no more ability to adjust slack into the assembly. Soooo - on that particular cable there were 2 nuts , one on each side of the bracket, plus the free-spinning cable end. I loosened the assmebly and moved the one nut from the cable side of the bracket to the carb side. (Now both locknuts are together, instead of separated by the cable mount.)
Once I put it all back together, now I had over 1/4" of freeplay at the throttle grip, which I then used the adjuster at the throttle assembly to dial out to the 1/8" that he manual recommended. Now as the cable stretches, I'll be able to adjust it properly.

That was about the bazillionth time I've taken that airbox off, and hopefully the last time. You can only tempt fate with dropping a screw down the carbs so many times, LOL.
