testing a speed sensor
I have a honda cbr 98 900 CC and I my speedometer and odometer work 2 % of the time only on and off , and when I turn on the bike when it is cold it always works just for the first 5 sec then goes back to zero with no odometer counting , I checked all the wires they seem fine , I was wondering if there is a way to check to see if the speed sensor is working when the speedometer and odometer are not ,just so I can make sure its not the gauges , does the speed sensor emit a signal that can be measured somewhere with a voltmeter ? so I can start eliminating all the possible problems, thank you
Hi.
Just gone through the same senario with my cbr 1996.
If you raise the back wheel and spin the wheel you should get fluctuating voltage of between 0-5v on the speedometer.
You will need a manual to find the correct wires on mine the pink wire was the feed to the speedo.
I ended up fitting a Speedohealer, the guys at there technical department where excellent might be woth e-mailing them.
Regards Mark.

In most Honda speed sensors, the 3-pin connector is al follows: Black = power, green = ground, pink = signal to speedo
Sounds like you have a bad connection somewhere. Maybe do a continuity check?
