Default Testing Alternator

Since my battery keeps dying i have made the assumption either my CDI is bad, or the alternator. Does anyone know how to test an alternator, or do i need to take it to a shop to do this? My bike stalls at the most random time, and then when i try to start it the battery is dead. Like i said, my only thoughts are the CDI or Alternator, anyone have any other ideas, i am open to suggestions.

Could be the battery, wiring, rectifier, regulator, or alternator. I recommend getting the Haynes manual which shows this in detail, but Here's how the Haynes manual says to test the alternator: You need a digital voltmeter (usually $20 at Sears, but sometimes it goes on sale for 1/2). Set the voltmeter to volts and check the battery. Should be 12 volts. At 5,000 rpm, it should read 13.5-15 volts. If it is over 15 volts, the regulator could be bad. Remove the gas tank, disconnect the 3-pin block connector with yellow wires. Set the voltmeter to read ohms x 1. Measure the resistance between each yellow wire on the alternator side of the connection. Then check for continuity between each terminal and ground. There should be none.

To check the regulator/rectifier, disconnect the white (3-pin) and red (4-pin) connectors (between the coils). Checking the resistance of the wires on the rear, the resistance between the following wires should be: red/white and green- infinity. Red/white and yellow-infinity. Green and red/white- 1-20. Green and yellow- 0.5-10. yellow and red/white- 0.5-10. Yellow and green- 10-200. Good luck.
