im lookin for a good but cheap Steering Damper/ stablizer any ideas its for a 954

 

I don't like to go for "cheap" when it comes to my 954...I've got the SCOTT'S, but also checkout the GPR model
both are good...then there's tthe Ohlin's if you really want to spend some $$$

 

i had the same question for the same bike..did you install it yourself or did you have a shop do it...i think i might be able to do it w/ the right instructions if its not toooo complicated...or do you suggest i shell out some extra cash for a shop to make sure it done right?

 

mine actually was already one the bike when I bought it, but they are fairly easy to install as long as you have the proper tools and some basic mechanical knowledge.

 

they are easy to put on use blue locktight on all the bolts, GPR are a nice unit and easy to adjust

 

Kinda stupid question, but what does a steering damper really do?
The name itself suggest that it dampens the steering, but what are the advantages?
does it make it more stable?

 

In order for modern bikes to handle so well they must intrinsically be a little unstable. So if you land a wheelie wierd or hit a bump while hauling *** there is a great possibility that you will perform what is called a 'tank slapper'. That's where the instability of the steering causes the bars to violently shake from lock to lock. There are ways to get out of a tank slapper. The most notable is to power through it -- rolling on the throttle vigorously will generally get you out of it. However this might be undesirable if you are rapidly approaching traffic or a curve. So what to do? Basically ya hook a shock absorber from the frame to the triple tree. This allows you to steer with your rather girlish steering inputs but will negate a heavy input from a bad landing or a pot hole. If you have a quality steering damper you'll really never know it's there -- well, until it does its job.
