I tried searching through the Forum but didn't have much luck on finding a fix for this. I'm pretty sure I've seen it before in one of the threads.

Anyways, one day -- both my speedometer and odometer went out. I just went out and tried to mess with the cable that plugs into the back of the speedometer (running from my wheel) but it feels pretty tight.

Is there anything special I should be looking for or anything that I can test to see what the problem is?

 

You don't say what model/year your bike is, that always help narrow the issues down.

Try dis-connecting the cable from the bike. Then check to see if it is intact. You do this by turning the cable at one end and seeing if the other end rotates.
It should turn freely, any resistance means that it needs to be lubed.

I'm going to guess that it's probably broken, inside the jacket. If so, it's an easily replaced fix. After that, regular lubing with a spray can of cable lube will prevent further issues.

If it doesnt have a cable, then it has a speed sensor. Look for it in the top of the trans.

Anyways, it's a '93 F2. I'll go ahead and mess with the cable this morning. I saw a couple of cables on Amazon for less than $10. Is that a decent place to buy them?

 

I would think $10 is a pretty decent price for anything on a motorcycle...try finding parts for a Ducati sometime.

 

Okay, so I'm trying to pull this Speedo cable off so I can test it. Pulling it off the wheel hub (I think that's what it's called) was easy -- just a single screw.

Now, I'm trying to pull it off of the back of my speedometer. I tried to use my fingers, way too tight for that. I tried to stick pliers up their and do it in a small space (vertically) -- no luck there. Without pulling off my front fairing, windshield, mirrors, and possibly headlight, is there an easier way to do this?

 

Does the knurled end extend below the housing? If so you might be able to use a faucet-house wrench. They look like this...
