Default Shifting Issues

Hello all,

Bike is a 2016 CBR300R

We are having some issues with shifting down from certain gears. The bike was recently rebuilt and we are still new to adjusting clutches and all of that. We are going to fiddle with it this weekend, but would like some insight into what this might be.

There are no issues shifting up. The issue seems to only occur under a couple of different conditions while shifting down.

Staying in 1st - 2nd. No issues shifting down from 2nd to 1st. We can do this over and over again without issue.

Staying in 1st - 3rd. From 3rd I can shift down to 2nd without issue. Attempting to shift down again to 1st is met with a "splashy" feeling in the shifter and it stays in 2nd.
The only way to access 1st from this point is to move the shifter up and then down.

Staying in 1st - 4th. From 4th I can shift down to 3rd without issue. Attempting to shift down again to 2nd is met with the same "splashy" feeling in the shifter and it stays in 3rd.
Same routine as above to get it into 2nd. Move the shifter up and then down into 2nd.
2nd to 1st is also splashy. Rinse and repeat to get it into 1st.

It is a problem through all 6 gears.

Is this just an issue with our outside adjustments, or could it be an issue with the gear shift linkage or something else on the inside of the engine? My buddy thinks that it's the gearshift drum stopper plate (see comment below)

what did the recent "rebuild" involve? How much was taken apart?
Unlikely to be the shift linkage, sounds like the shifter is not engaging all the way leaving you between gears.

It was a complete tear down and rebuild of the engine.

Just got back from testing and it is a problem through all 6 gears.

Would pulling the shifter out and lubing it help? Is there anything we can do without tearing down the engine again?
I'll have to look at it next time I'm with it, but I think we can get into the sides of it without pulling it all the way out.

And sorry, not the gear shift linkage....the star sprocket on the inside of the engine, obviously forgot the name. - Gear shift drum stopper plate (shift star?). Apologies, it's actually been a while since the rebuild. Just copied and pasted from the 300 forums because I wasn't getting a response.

#6 on this parts list.

The gear shift linkage has been adjusted around and that's not helping obviously.

The star plate was the only thing we were iffy on. It rotated a click after we had installed the gearshift drum stopper (#7 on the list) or tightened something further up the chain. It was late, we were unsure if it was a feature of us moving up the chain of things and we just left it.

Understood. It does sound like something is misaligned and that the drum isn't rotating into the right place - you're stuck between gears, which is why you need to go "up" before you can go down.

This video - about 9min in might help?

Man this sucks for you - I know how annoying it can be to get an engine back together and find out something's amiss. Good luck!

Another video - this reminds me of those videos of mechanics in India working on dirt floors, throwing parts all over the place - don't be like that please :-) Here they were replacing a bent shift spindle..

That first video is from the series that we used to do the whole project haha XD
The second video confirms that we can get to it without pulling the engine...woo!

It's more of an annoyance than anything. Kinda sucks not being able to downshift quickly. Luckily I'm not the one that has to use it regularly.

Just wanted a second opinion on what it might be before we went hunting for the issue. Thank you so much! Will do it during summer when we have access to a clean space and report back.
