Default shifting gears

on the highway the other day in 6th gear and went to downshift to 5 to pick up a little and when i flicked the clutch and tapped the gear down it seemed as if it were neutral.. the clutch was fully disengaged and there was no connection between gears at all, the bike was just revving. i grabed the clutch and kicked it down again and it grinded into place... is there an adjustment i need to make or could this be from a bad clutch or need an oil change?

Its a 01 F4i 16k miles

Yeah, I've done that a time or two. The worst one is when your taking off fast from a stop and end up in neutral; embarrassing.
You can adjust the shifter so that your foot makes better engagement (which is what I did), or just be more cognizant and assertive when shifting. The grinding you felt was probably from the engine revolutions not being in sync with the selected gear.
Along those lines, I have found that matching engine revolution with the next gear selected improves transition when shifting. I.E. when downshifting, bring your RPM up about 5K+, or just blip the throttle, and release the throttle to bring RPM down while upshifting.
Now if this continues to occur to you, then quite possibly there is something wrong.

I always blip the throttle for a smooth and accurate down shift, It may be that I'm very quick when I shift and basically flick the clutch and tap the shift lever. I also have done the 1st to neutral a few times at a hard take off and feel like a damn noob when I go to hit 2nd and all I get is rev limiter haha...

But I have ALWAYS noticed when I focus on actually KICKING the shift lever I never have missed 1st to 2nd. I guess I'll try to focus more on this shifting method on every shift!

what way did you adjust your lever. Up or down? I put my lever a bit more up once and I didn't seem to feel a whole lot of difference?
