Default Rectifier/Regulators from Alternators

I'm in the process of replacing mine for my 1898 Hurricane 600 and was wondering:

Are the Rectifiers/Regulators on automobile alternators similar and perhaps even adaptable for motorcycle use? I did some research and I think I read somewhere that GM alternators (perhaps others) are 3 phase and they have both the Rectifier and Regulator circuits combined.

The only thing I can think of is the need for adequate cooling.

At $100 dollars for a new Rect/Reg, taking apart an old alternator at a wrecking yard and soldering a few wires doesn't seem like too bad an idea.

Shadow is right on. Spend the $'s and get a new R/R. It's true that the OEM Honda one is not very durable but other makes have strong ones. I put in a 2005 GSXR R/R in my F3. Much better heat sink translates to longer life. Well worth the $125.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I already had one ordered, but i was just throwing around ideas for future use.

The GSXR R/R is interchangeable with CBRs or did you have to do anything besides swapping the connector ends? I'd say a R/R from a 2005 model ANYTHING would be an upgrade over anything designed 21 years ago...
