I could just be the fairing...that is right in the sweet spot for vibration and mirrors, brackets, ect can get a harmonic vibration and make noises...hard to diagnose with out actually hearing it

There should be a special forum for cam chain tensioners breaking on the f4i. It sounds like that is your problem. Rattleing at 3k and 5k are classic signs. The CCT (cam chain tensioner) is a very common problem with these bikes. I had to replace mine at 5k miles. The part is pretty cheap (like 50 bucks max maybe) but the labor is expensive is you get it done somewhere (you have to take of the seat and gas tank. If you are mechanically inclined, here is a great webpage that tells you how to replace it. http://www.bossturbo.com/cbr/howto_cct.shtml

Hope that helps.

So I take it that the missing fairing bolt wasnt the issue????
If it is the camchain tensioner, it can cause SERIOUS engine damage if it fails and allows the cam chain to get to loose and skip a tooth, making the timing wrong and having a valve get jammed, or locking up the camshaft, or something of the sort
If you are concerned about the noise take it to a Honda Dealer and have it diagnosed, since it is under warranty

well it turns out there was 2 noises one that was fixed by the bolt and the other one that is still there. i thought maybe the bolt got loose again real quick and was gonna put lock tight on it but now im worried cuz of your post. we rode 125miles today and it was there the hole time and i went outside a little while ago and stuck my head close to the motor and listen and it does sound like its coming from the motor now that im paying close attention. im takeing it first thing in the morning to the dealership and tell them and see what happens. it sucks though cuz ive only had the bike 3 days now. i test drove it before i bought it but was checking out everything else so hard i didnt even pay attention to the nosie b/c it was missing one bolt on the faring. i replaced it and then tightin the other one so now one rattle is fixed and now this one is still here. is this a real common proublm with these bikes? i ask b/c my buddie has a 99 f4600 and he bought it wrecked and has a simmler rattle but he thinks its b/c of his busted up plastic. thanks amillion for your info cuz nowing my luck i would just say f*** it and ended up messin my motor up thinking it was the plastic.

He did say it was a common proublm with these bikes. But, ill let ya'll know what happens.

Hello ,
My first post.
I have a 1993 f2 which has just had a new cam chain , blade, guides and tensioner fitted 300 miles ago because of a very loud rattle when the bike was warmed up , between 3 and 4000 rpm. The rattle disapeared completly but has now returned ( within 300 miles ! )
Having read your posts , i'm pressuming that the tensioner is faulty already , can this be true after such a short space of time ?
Is the manually adjusted one that is available a Honda part or a copy part made elsewhere ?
Any advice would be appreciated.
jimmer.

Good thing your family members have helped you make the decision to take her in. We'd hate to lose you or your bike for something that could've been avoided.
