I have a 2002 CBR600R4i that has a third gear problem. All other gears work fine but will not go into 3rd gear at all. I was tolf that the shift forks may be bent.

I want to try and fix it myself.

What parts should I buy and where should I start?

Warm the bike up, then drain the gear box over a magnet. (Stick a magnet in the oil stream as it empties) Hopefully, you won't seeany metal on the magnet when you're done. If you do, start searching ebay for a transmission...it's easier and often cheaper than a total rebuild.

If no, down load the manual and read up on the shift fork assembly. The shift fork isn't too difficult a job. You could check the shift fork first, but it's easier to check for problems internally by the magnet test. The fork won't matter if it's internal problems.

Hell, there may be a magnet on your drain plug. Hadn't had to change my oil yet, my bike is still relatively new to me.

No metal in the oil, so I assuming it is my shift forks.
My Sunday project.

 

I pulled out the shift drum and forks. They seem pretty good.
The left side fork is a little worn, very little.
The drum has a 1mm size piece chipped off of it.
Would this be the problem or do I need to replace the whole works?

 

It is actually quite a job on the F4i. You basically remove everything from the lower part of the motor.[&:]

 

Any ideas?

 

I ordered new shift drum and forks. I replaced them and scrubbed my clutch plates. Put everything back together. It goes into 3rd gear now but under hard acceleration it pops out of third and back into 2nd.
