Default Problem w/ 2nd Gear

Hey guys, just picked up a used '02 F4i that a friend layed over. Needed cosmetic work and a few misc parts replaced, one of which was the gear shifter. It was broke off at the toe and seemed to be clicking through the gears fine. I replaced it though, and took the bike for a test ride yesterday. Here is the problem.

When shifting from first to second, it is hitting Neutral nearly everytime and is very hard to find 2nd gear. Sometimes it will click in just fine with no problems from first to second. Other times it shifts to Neutral and when I try to click up to second there is a clicking sound coming from the gear box but it won't grab the gear. I've tried clutch, no clutch, shifting softly, hardly, different RPMs, etc. and it is hit or miss.

Any ideas/thoughts on what could be the problem? I mean I'm sure there is obviously a problem somewhere between the gear shift and transmission, but more narrow idea?

Thanks!

Try driving slowly through first and slowly shift into second and really focus on going through neutral into second. There may be transmission damage but it could be the way your shifting (not lift up enough).

Thanks for your help. I've tried shifting several different ways, including how you mentioned and it is still hit or miss. Something must be wrong. I guess I'll take it in and have a mechanic look at it.
