I bought one of those oil filter magnets for my bike. The manual says not to remove the magnet until you remove the filter but the filter is so small, you can't get a wrench on it without removing the magnet first. Not to mention the magnet hits the exhaust pipe even if you manage to get a grip on the filter. I would definitely give this one a thumbs down.

 

Why not just get a magnetic drain plug?

 

You can mount the magnet anywhere on the filter, they say not to remove it before the filter but aslong as you let the bike cool down (and the majority of the oil drain out) you should be o.k to take the magnet off and then the filter. Most filters I've seen (automotive) have a magnet built in anyway. My two cents

Well, it is jaded as I sell magnetic drain plugs, but....

Oil filter magnets are good. They do the same thing as a magnetic drain plug, just in a different way. I have always been opposed to the high price and the fact they are on the outside of the engine though. Magnetic drain plugs are hidden inside your engine and give a indication of engine wear. Unless you have a filter cutter, the filter magnets do not do this.

I feel better with the magnetic drain plugs. then you can see IMMEDIATELY when you change your oil if there is need for concern. if you have a filter cutter, and routinely cut open old filters for autopsies, then it doesnt make a difference, but the drain plug is my choice because its just easier all around.

In my experience, the magnetic drain plugs work very well and they are cheap insurance to help protect the bike's engine from metal particles
