Red face Oil Change - New Guy

Hey Guys,

I just recently purchased an 06 CBR 600RR and would love to change the oil on it just to provide myself with a fresh riding start.

I'm new to bikes, but not new to mechanics and how things work on engines. I was just curious if there was any tips you guys could provide me on where to start, what tools to acquire for a smooth change everytime I need to and I am also curious to know your opinion on possibly adding some kind of Fuel Cleaner or something you might add to a New (purchased used) bike.

Furthermore, is there any specific oil i should look to use? I like the TLC approach to my bike =).

Thanks for your help guys

I would buy in bulk, save money down the road. I wrap the manifold with aluminum foil, because when you remove the oil filter, oil will drip...you don't want any oil to touch the header pipe.

If you plan on replacing your stator cover, do it first...not after oil change.

Enjoy...

Just go with the honda GN4 oil it will do the bike right and the honda oil filters are of high quality. I say use seafoam or techron every few tanks just to keep everything squeaky clean.

it's not what oil you use.... it's that you make sure you use the right amount and that you change it often enough....

i can't tell you how many motors i've seen and bikes i've seen that have problems - they're a quart low, the guy has never changed the oil filter, etc.

use whatever you want to use. i just use valvoline 10w40 synthetic if i have the money and i use the dino oil if i don't have enough cash for synthetic (because valvoline is what autozone carries). but check your bike often enough - because your bike will burn a lil oil.

the only tools i use are a socket for the sump bolt and a funnel for the fresh oil. if the filter won't come off by hand, i grab a big screwdriver and a hammer - then make the filter my bitch....

some aluminum tin foil over the headers when you're taking the filter off helps them to not smoke (especially if you need the screwdriver and hammer)

A piece of angle aluminum works as well.
