Are you just changing the oil and not the filter? I didn't think you could change the filter without removing the fairing. Even if its possible, its not hard to drop the lower section fairings. Plus, you won't have to worry about getting oil all over them and you will have a lot of room and be able to see everything. Also, I tend to take that time to inspect items that I normally can't see anyway such as coolant lines and visually inspect for leaks.
back to your question, the reason your getting different answers is because some values are with the filter change, and some are not. I believe it is 3.2 if you change the filter as well. But any number that is given is just a guide. You should always check to make sure you have the proper amount of oil in. I would suggest putting in 3 quarts if your changing the filter as well, start the bike to let it circulate and then shut it off to check it. Add until you get the proper amount. You could also drain all of the oil from the bike and filter. Then as you empty a quart, fill it with the old oil. that way your putting in the same amount you have taken out. It will at least give you a safe level in which to check it. But 3 quarts should be really close to where you need to be.

You could use a flashlight if your lighting is not good enough, but if you were outside in the sun, you should have no problem seeing the level. Just remember, you have to run the engine for a bit, then shut it off. Wait a minute and then check it. the oil will fill the glass up. I actually use a hand held extension mirror to check mine. I can sit on my bike and hold it level, then look down at the mirror and see where the level is at.
