My recently purchased used bike is showing an alarming low mpg rate. When I first rode her home, I got got around 25 mpg. That is pretty low in itself. However, now I get around 15 mpg. 15!

I don't smell fuel, and there isn't anything dripping onto the ground. She runs fine at all RPMS, and I have never had a problem with her mechanically. But this is too much. Not sure what is going on, would appreciate your thoughts on this matter.

As far as I know, the gearing and ECU are stock. All other fluids are fine.

I am thinking there is a leak somewhere that is increasing. But I don't smell fuel and there are no signs of such on the bike.

Please help!

 

Is someone siphoning your fuel in the middle of the night?

 

You sure you're not hamfisting the throttle? I'm lucky to get 25 mph on the HP4. Then again, I usually ride up on the revs and low on the gears

 

can hamfisting the throttle really cause this much drop in mpg? but i havent changed my riding style since my honda cbr and I've never seen this much of a drop. My riding isnt on the tame side, but Im not popping wheelies all the time or shotgunning from lights.

I just did out my mpg for my last tank, I went 224 miles off one tank and I was pretty heavy on the throttle. Got just under 48mpg. That seems abnormally high considering normally I don't go below 6k revs.

 

No. Guys that are wringing it out at the track are still in the mid to upper 20's. Has there been anything else change in the bike besides just the mpg? Choppy throttle response? Rough idle?

Is it throwing any sort of code? Does it use an o2 sensor? Is your FPR in the tank on the pump or is it on the fuel rail?



How far are you riding when you do ride? I thought I had an issue when I moved into my fraternity house during college. I was commuting during the week and each ride was only a few miles to and from class/grocery shopping/most of the food places we ate at/etc. I was letting the bike heat up each time before I set off... so when the fuel light came on at 80 miles - I thought I had an issue. But I didn't. I wasn't accounting for all of the time the bike was running at idle, warming up per mile ridden. Then, on the weekends I'd fill up and get almost 130 miles before the light came on because I was on a 4 hour ride with no stops (the bike was only heating up one time).

 

yeah it's very strange because she runs perfect. no rough idle, no choppy throttle, she is very smooth and easy to ride. My average ride is an hour and 30. nothing less than that. Just now I went out again for a long ride and I went hard. no loss of power at redlines. im going to have to strip her down. =)
