Default idiot light

I just picked up an 01 929 a while back and now the red idiot light is on with the FI indicator in the speedo display. I (unfortunately) have a CA bike so it has all the emissions garbage to make it legal. Air cleaner is clean and ready to go.

Any other ideas? Could it be the $140 O2 sensor? I hate to take it to a Honda shop and get bent over. It still runs like a champ.

Also, anyone ever attempt to take off the CA garbage? Easy or not? How much HP gain?

Thanks for any help.

Count the flashes.... a long flash counts as 10 and the fast flash is a 1. So bliiiiink bliiiiink blink blink would be 22. I can look it up for you in your shop manual and or you can download it yourself from Click Here

thanks. I'll give that a shot and see what the code is. I have a sneaking suspicion it is part of the CA stuff. I'd like to see what's involved in removing it.

9 blinks. IAT (air temperature) sensor loose or faulty. $14.93 to replace. we'll see what happens.

well.....the saga has ended. I checked the connection to the IAT and the plug was pretty fouled up. cleaned it out real good and put it back together. Turned key............no dice. Still blinking 9 times. Called the local Honda service shop and they clued me in on erasing the codes in the computer. Read in the manual that you have to use a jumper wire to short out the service plug. Voila! After a few failed attempts, we are good to go. Thanks again Don for letting me know about the lights.
