What was the road surface like? If the surface was rough, like with a tar and chip road, it can be quite noisy while your moving.

if it was while you were stopped, its hard to say. can you describe the noise a little bit better. Did the bike vibrate at all while it was making the sound?

Also, don't forget about sounds around you. If you just came from a freeway, its possible the noise was not even your bike, but with a helmet on, it can be hard to tell sometimes.

It has never leaked anything in the past I checked the cap it's on there good and dry. It didn't vibrate at all when it did it. It was just when I came to a stope I heard it howl likea high pitch wine. But only for a few seconds then it went away. It's never done it before. Perhaps the cct maybe. I couldn't get it to do it again.

I'd check two things
1 Your chain is lubed
2 Your wheel bearings are all good................
I've had that noise from both areas on bikes in the past, so check them to be safe - hate to see you lose a wheelbearing miles from any help !

+1 on the "might not have been your bike at all" idea.

Leaving work the other day - I'm waiting to pull out into traffic, when I start hearing a metallic knocking. It happened just as I increased revs to roll forward in the line of cars and went away. I pull forward again and it happens again. Now I'm kinda worried something uncool is happening in the engine.

I let out again and I'm next in line to pull out. I hear the knocking now, getting louder, but now without my revs increasing.

then I look up and notice the bucket truck in a parking lot right across the street raising its lift to change a lightbulb on a lightpole. sure enough - now that I'm looking at it, I can tell it is making a weird ratcheting clanking that is what I swore was coming from underneath me.

Helmets redirect sounds in the weirdest ways.

still required a 2nd gear rip up the block for peace of mind :-)
