Default How much damage did he do?

I have a 96 cbr600f3, and the previous owner never oiled his air filter, I opened the air box and there is some dust inside it, not a huge amount, but it is an airbox, so enough that I'm going to have to clean it. He had the bike for three years and used it for about three thousand miles, would this have done very severe damage to my engine life, or should it still last about as long?

is a K&N or oil type filter for one? Stock filters are just paper that need replaced periodically.

I clean n reoil my K&N once a year n I ride approx 10k a year, so you shouldnt have any damage to your engine. Just clean/oil or replace you air filter

no, it's a uni foam/oil air filter, and it was bone dry all the way through. It also smelled like gas, is that unusual?

Yeah, I spose, all the things people tell you about how sensative engines are is a little much. I took apart my dirtbike that I beat on this season, and checked out the bore and it was still factory spec, then again I clean my air filter every other trip.

Can you see any dust or sediment in the intake beneath the filter? If you can, then vacuum it out with a Shop-Vac, if not, don't worry, replace/service the filter as you see fit. If you are still concerned, run the bike awhile, then change the oil.

Yes, there is a not insignificant amount of dust past the air filter, so I'm going to clean out the carbs to be on the safe side, plus I don't know when they've been cleaned last, all I know is not in the last 3 years. Plus the bike is only getting 40, so it's probably needing a tune up anyways.

Memories...... I had an F3 for a long while. Put 60k miles on her..... Did basic love. NO PROBLEMS. They are bullet proof!! What you might want to do is take a peek in the float bowls and see if the jets are messed with. If the bike has an aftermarket exh, you might want to richen it up a bit. Mine really responded well to a few sizes bigger!!!

It should not have done too much damage, The f3's are pretty bullet proof. I put 60,000 on an f2 and lived on a dirt road, Had no issues
