2003 Honda 954 with only 7500 good miles. Just install aftermarket D&D exhaust (slip on). I notice my temp gadge go to 232 and not sure why? Starting the bike, I can run it for 45 sec and it will start at 95 and climbing. I check the anti freeze, fuse, all good. So what could be the problem? New cbr rider, novice mech. Thanks

 

Do you mean it goes up to 232 while sitting at a long light or riding at slow speeds? What's your cruising temp on the highway? Cuz idling or going slow it's gonna get hot. The fan shold be running when it's at that temp. Mine will climb up to 228-231 standing still but the fan comes on at about 225 and brings it back down to 218. Then once I get rolling again it goes back down to 178-180. If yours sounds like this, then it sounds like it's perfectly normal. If the fan isn't coming on though or the temp isn't coming back down then you've got problems

You also may want to check to see that your water pump is working and that the thermostat is opening. Both could be a problem if they aren't working properly. I have an 01 929 and when i let my bike idle, the temp will rise up to about 220 to 222. My fan will kick in at 216-217. could be different for your bike but i agree that you should make sure your fan is working.

yo mang...it's unlikely that the water pump will fail.
usually when it does, it leaks...and that's about it. the fan inside the pump is connected to the oil pump, which is driven by the motor and tranny i believe. therefore, the only way for the pump not to be pumping is if a fin breaks inside, or the rod that connects it to the oil pump busts...also unlikely.

if it in fact is overheating, and you've already checked for fan coming on no later than 228, optimally around 225 or earlier...then your culprits would be clogged lines, too many busted radiator fins or things caught in it...and thermostat. you can do the test to see if the t-stat is opening on time or you can just run without it to see if it still heats up like crazy...if it does, you know it's not the t-stat.

also, you may have to check your sensor...but the usually don't go 'bad'...they just fail.

True. It is rare for the water pump to fail. I do know how it all comes together but really i was getting at the point you made about the fins breaking off (still very unlikely but just another idea of something to check).

 

you know how i know all this? cause mah bike was overheating for like a year mang...and i swapped EVERYTHING...took the pump apart...
and what was it? dunno...i flushed the pith out of it and now i haven't had a chance to get caught i traffic to see how she's doing.
i suspect clogged line was my culprit...as far as the 954...dunno...
