Headlight out and bike wants to start without pressing the switch
Hello everyone,
I’m hoping to get some advice on a strange issue I’ve had on my 95 CBR FS import.
After work the other day I turned on the key and the headlight was on, I pressed the start switch and the starter kicked in but the bike didn’t start an it cut out, this knocked off the headlight. I took the key out and when it was back in and on the headlight was out. I then pulled in the clutch and the bike started (it must have been in first and then when I pulled the clutch triggered the switch).. I assumed I’d blown the fuse or the bulb but when it started without me pressing the starter switch I thought it must be something in the wiring?
I got it home and switched it off for a minute and then back on and the headlight was on and it didn’t start until I pressed the switch..
Hopefully I have described this well, any advice on what might be causing this?
P.S. Hope this is the correct thread for this question, happy to move it
Headlight is powered through start-button. When you press start-button, it turns OFF headlight and sends power to starter-solenoid.
Due to movement of button, this often breaks solder-joints on wires inside start-button. Take it apart and you'll see obvious problem. Usually just need to solder wires back on.

Thank you for such a quick response, I’ll get the switch apart and have a look!
So I’ve checked the switch and all the connections look good..
Also I put the key in and the headlight came on and it only starts on the button..
The fuse box also looks fine (no signs of water or corrosion)
Any more thoughts on why it intermittently stops the headlight and then wants to start the bike as soon as the key is in (That is if your out of gear and side stand up (showing the neutral switch and side stand switch is okay))
Also took a look at the wires behind the dash and also show no signs of shorting or water ingress
You'll need to remove switch to get underneath and look at contacts.
Solder blob may actually be broken and wires are just resting on top.
Lightly tug on wires.
Measure between headlight wires at plug. ohms = ????
Wiggle button and external wires lightly. ohms = ???

It may be worn out, I see copper on tracks. Might be worth cleaning off underside where switch track rubs on contacts with electronics cleaner.
