12 mpg is not even possible I would think. You said they told you the tank was full when they dropped it off, did you check? As for leaks the first place to look is your exhaust, is there gas dripping out of the openings? What about a puddle under the bike when you are parked? I know it's kinda a stupid question to ask, you would tell us if you saw that, but I figured I would ask at this point. Fill'er up and try again......[8D]

I wouldn't keep gas for to long, especially if you live in a climate with high and low temps. If you do and it is in a metal can, get a plastic one.
Gas "going bad" is due to water. Condensation will happen worse in a metal can. If you can keep it a nominal temp most of the time I would keep it anumore than about 6 months.
Gas will not break down because it is a by-product of pure petroleum and is at it's lowest chemical form, what breaks down are the additive the manufacture puts in it. If you keep it for a long period of time add a can of "dry gas" to it.
