No and Yes. Tightening the front sprocket would not create the noise you are referring to, unless there were teeth problems with the sprocket (too small, broken teeth, etc). Tightening the chain too tight would do it. Static slack should be between .6 inch to 1.00 inch or roughly 3/4 inch or more. This could be verified by having bike on ground while sitting on it, then leaning over and moving the chain up and down. Also, if chain isn't lubricated well enough, links (even if they o-ring or x-ring) can bind and not go through there range of motion while rotating over the sprockets.

since i changed the sprockets earlier today its been making a kinda of a ticking noise. The adjuster is all the way in so i can't loosen the chain anymore but i'm pretty sure that
there is atleast a half and inch freeplay. I cleaned the chain recently and used some chain wax my local dealer recommended, someone told me to use wd40 and white lithium greese. i guess ill try that next

I have an 01 929 and it started making a clicking noise after I tightened the chain took it to a mechanic friend and he told me the chain has a dead spot. Which means the chain is not bending around the sprocket completely at that spot and it causes a popping. He told me to go ahead and replace my drive kit since the bike has 20,000 miles anyhow. Hope that helps.

The chain has about 1/2 inch freeplay when I'm sitting on it and i can't make it any looser because the adjuster is bottomed out already. Is this enough freeplay?
Can I just add a link to the chain or should i get a new one? The one i have now was on the bike when i bought it and the guy said it was fairly new.

I was looking at the chain and sprockets......the chain is 525 and i'm not sure what the sprockets are for as they came with the bike.
Is it possible that the sprockets are for a 520 chain and be causing the noise i'm hearing?? Thanks everyone for your info.

Was it hard to change your sprockets... should I buy and install my own chain and sprockets you think?
