Default Fixing hole in gas filter

I have a CBR600F3 97 30K miles. There is a pre-filter that is ~4" long that slides inside the gas tank.

It was a real PITA to get the filter back in cause the filter was SO tight- it kept crushing down and not sliding in. Finally I shoved it back in with a screwdriver, but made a tiny tear in the filter. DOH.

So question is:

1. Can I order a replacement somewhere.

2. If I can't find a replacement should I just put a little epoxy on the hole? Will gasoline eat the epoxy?

Any thoughts on plugging a hole in the filter?

If I go with new I need an OEM screen set- don't know why the dealer couldn't find it. Here is the comparison at 3 sites that were recommended on this site:

$22.48 (Including $5 shipping )
Ronayers.com Microfiche Honda>Motorcycle>1997>CBR600F3>FUEL TANK
The added benefit of this site is that they show the original part microfiche that shows the OEM part number.

$23.04 (Free shipping)
1997 Honda CBR600F3 Parts, 1997 Honda CBR600F3 OEM Parts - BikeBandit.com

$30 ($19+10 shipping)
OEM Parts Honda CBR600F3 1997 FUEL TANK - Cheap Cycle Parts

I'd just get a new one if you are really worried about it. I bought the whole petcock and it came with a screen from ronayers. I can't remember what cost was but it was cheaper than ebay and better peace of mind than trying a used one. When you install it, just take your time and ease it in there.

In all honesty, your probably ok. The screen kit doesn't really do anything other than catch large objects. The inline filter is the one that filters out the small particles.

But, like what was already said, you should buy a new one over a used one.

But, do not put epoxy on it. The gas will soften it and will plug up everything.

Doh! You're SO right! What I pulled out of the bottom of the tank was the pre-filter! Clymer was misleading because they talk about cleaning the filter and they show pictures of the shut off valve. The filter can be found by following the tube that goes into the shut off valve. I have 30K miles on the bike. I can't see if the filter is dirty 'cause the plastic casing is cloudy. Should I clean the gas filter somehow or buy a new one??

The pre-filter I pulled out of the gas tank Honda calls a screen set. For future reference is it possible to get the screen set out from inside the tank somehow? It was quite difficult getting it back into the tank after spraying large objects off of it.

Thanks!

Double Doh! Looks like it is recommended that the fuel filter be changed every 2 years, or 6K miles or every other oil change so I'm probably 20K miles behind schedule. Also mine was installed with the arrow pointing BACKWARDS toward the gas tank

I'm def getting a new one- good thing I'm already cleaning the carbs since it doesn't look like they've been protected from impurities in the gas for a while.

For the 'record' the part number (thanks ron ayers) is 16900-MG8-003. They had the OEM for <$15. My dealer is getting an aftermarket one for me for <$6... it turns out the fuel filter is the same as the one for the Goldwing 1500. This way the rubber holder will fit exactly.

Some people clean their filters using B-12 Carb Cleaner doesn't sound like a great idea to me because a new one is under $10 and cleaning carb is such a pain! Also who knows what kinda havoc carb cleaner will do to the plastic gas filter housing.
