Default Erratic Speedo?

Hi All,

I've Googled, searched the forum, no luck. SO I thought I'd see if anyone has seen this before.

The bike is a 96 CBR F3, looks like crap, runs quite nice. In fact the only real problem (aside from the cam chain tensioner, manual one on the way) is that the speedo gives some really odd readings. From what I can tell the Odometer is ok.

It seems that when I start the bike and am initially riding in 1st and second gear, the speedo is pretty accurate, however I'll check it again later when I know I am doing about 40 or so and it will be anywhere from 55 on up, eventually it gets stuck around 155 or so and won't move unless the bike it shut off and started again.

Any thoughts? As always, thanks in advance!

Im not completely sure but do these bikes have cable speedo's? I know I had a car that did that once but it would go up and down and then just drop off. It needed to be greased and put back into the speedo. ?? Just an idea.

If its the cable driven speedo then it will be a honda part called a drive dog which sits at the end of the cable into the wheel.

Alternately it is the cable itself. Remove it from the wheel and the cable housing and check for wear.

Check page 18-3 of the service manual for steps on troubleshooting the speedometer. It's actually pretty cut and dry.

Oh snap!

Lol, noted, and the sad part is I actually have the manual at home (printed from a PDF). I'll have a look at that tonight

Thanks everyone, sorry to be a noob, I'll get better.
