Default Erratic idle

I have a 94 F2 I bought a few months ago. It was only running on 2 cylinders at the time. I have since cleaned the carbs and replaced plugs and the battery. I have already went through the bike and tested everything electronic. Everything checks out fine there.

The issue im having now is the idle fluctuates about 1,000 rpm and I can't set the idle down anywhere near 1,000 rpm or the bike dies. There is no hesitation in throttle response. Im wondering if maybe this is a lean condition? I have not synched the carbs yet either.

The bike has a two brothers slip on and stage 1 jet kit. Air/fuel screws set at 2 turns out.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Is the sync gonna help any if I do it at 2-3000 rpm? That's the lowest I can get it to idle without the bike dying.

Read the plugs first to make sure they are not being fouled some how. If they look ok its a sync issue. If they are fouled then its jet related or possibly something else.

The plugs did look pretty good when I checked last. It also wont hold steady rpm. When I was checking the voltage at 5k it was all over the place. I will do the sync soon and hopefully cure it. Thanks for the help.

a major cause for fluctuating idle is a vacume leak or suckin air from somewhere. make sure when you set the carbs back on you got all the carb bodies seated well in the rubber boots. but as stated , after a carb rebuild , a sync is needed as well.

Well I made a trip to Lowes and got everything to make a sync tool. Got back home and after I finished putting it together I tried to start the bike to let it warm up and now it wont even start. Just cranks with a tiny bit of smoke coming out of the exhaust. Im lost now.

1. check bowls for fuel.
2. Turn her over for a minute and then pull the plugs, what do they look like?
3. hold plug against engine, turn over, check for spark on all 4.
4. check to make sure you had the proper plug in the right cylinder. I never really asked HOW it ran outside of idle. A bike can run like crap off 2 or 3 cylinders if you rev it high enough but it dies at idle.
5. if you have fuel in bowls, plugs spark and are in the right firing order i would run a compression test and/or pull the carbs and go over them again making sure nothing is clogged, everything is seated properly and the choke and other moving parts are working well.

btw are you trying choke on and off when you start?

It is getting fuel. I pulled the plugs and all 4 were black and wet with fuel. I cleaned the plugs and checked for spark. Everything seems to check out ok there. I've tried starting with the choke on and off and it will fire a couple of times then seem to foul out pretty quick. It will start and run on starting fluid for a few seconds. When it does run it runs pretty good above idle. That's what I was hoping to fix with the carb sync.
