Default Electrical short 99 f4

So I am going to attempt to find a short in my electrical system. I am really lost as to where I should start. The problem is affecting my gauges and cases the bike to sputter out and around 4000. Any ideas/suggestions. I really have no clue what I'm doing but I have a multimeter. Lol.

Start with the grounds. Make sure they are good and clean. Check the ground wires to see if they are corroded.

Next is the connectors. Take ALL the plastic off the bike and systematically go through the bike and disconnect every connector, clean it (I use electrical connector cleaner which is kind of like brake cleaner) and then you can do one of three things. Either 1) pack the connector with dielectric grease, 2) spray the connector with some electrical spray, or 3) spray the connector with WD40. Also make sure there is good contact in the connector. Sometimes the male/female spade connections get loose and you need to pinch the female connector a tad to tighten it back up.

If this doesn't solve the problem, then it is time to start looking at faulty components.

How is this problem affecting your gauges? Are they randomly quitting?

When the odometer reads the wrong mileage my speedo doesn't work nor does my temp gauge. The fuel light is on and the tach jumps around. I normally turn the key on and off like 100 times and sometimes it will revert back to the correct mileage and the speedo will work. Today I unplugged the voltage regulator while the bike was running ( which cause it to die). However when I plugged it back in an turned they key off its back to normal. I turn the key off and on and drove around the block like 3 times and it still works. So idk what it's deal is.

Default i just got done fixn the same kinda problem

i had similar symtoms and it was the starter and kill switch. the connections were corroded and not making a good connection. i cleaned them and resoldered for temp fix. even though it will still work good i still bought a new switch and gonna replace. i also had to run new wires from my stator to regulator/ rectifier. they were corroded also...just my experience.
