DIY home paint job
Ya, I did it -- to make it look good expect to spend a lot of time on details. I painted mine and I'm still not finished. Gonna redo a section at a time to see if I can get it better.
All I can advise is to read, read, read everything you can find on the subject and then practice, practice, practice. And remember: the more prep time you spend the better it will look.

You can do it but its not going to look good, you really need a paint booth or a garage that you can spray down with water so there is limited dust. Your best friend in this situation should be degreaser and a tack rag. Use it between every step i.e between primering, basecoating, and clear coat. If you arent using a spray gun and real paint and just used spray cans then you can still do this but i dont know how good it is going to come out. Just read everything you can about painting and even then it takes time and practice to get it down right. I suggest spraying alot of scrap stuff if you can find it, like old door or something from a car that way you can learn to control the gun and have no runs. another option is when you are spraying to just dust over the areas and do alot of coats like 4 or 5 to get full coverage that way you dont have to worry about runs and such. How exactly were you planing on doing the paint, if you let me know i can let you know what the best way to go is.
I rattlecanned mine with high build primer and satin paint from walmart.... no clear.. i like it like that..

First of all, start with a clean well ventilated area preferably sectioned of with plastic viscain sheets to create a booth. Try to have all your prep work done, i.e. cleaning and sanding. DO NOT go down to the plastic or metal. Simply scuff the painted surface till it dull's so you are sure to remove the hardened clear coat as well as any wax's, leaving a softened layed of paint will help with adhesion. Then, using a heat gun and some "PATIENCE" remove the vinyl stickers. Tracing around them with a razor also helps seperation from the clear coat. While paint area is at a minimum of 70 degrees F.(naturally do not use heaters, fans or around any equipment that could cause sparks of any sort, remember paint fumes are highly explosive and there will be alot of them). Do any body work now Plastic weld, Bondo, and for small plastic scratches that goes into plastic with a rough edge, run over it with a razor like your shaving to remove rough plastic then use a plastic filler to smooth. I prefer to use a single step Acrylic paint with clear coat added in. Ask your local paint supplier for a tech sheet for the paint you choose and it will specify wich primer, hardener, and thinner to use and at what ratios. It will also give specs. on gun settings and preasures. Make sure the compressor you are using has an oil seperator before the air line and especially for first time painters I recommend a "Fish Eye remover" be add to paint. Then begin to paint as suggested by other posters, using several coats of light dusting with about 5 min. tack up time between untill a good clean full coverage can be seen. If excessive running starts allow to dry completelly then wet sand smooth and continue. Practice is a good suggestion but I would recommend you practice on the surfaces you plan to paint after all every surface paints differently and you dont want to learn how to paint a steel car door with three coat enamel and 1 coat clear and then go shoot a plastic bike panel with two step acrylic and clear coat. Also, last piece of advice, is to set up hooks from a ceiling so panels hang at chest level this makes it easier to spray evenly from 8 to 10 inches from surface and will also prevent unintentional disturbance to the surface while it cures. hope this helps [8D]
