whats the best way to clean spark plugs

In the early 70's I remember seeing a small sand-blasting machine where the working end of a spark plug could be inserted and blasted. I don't remember if it used sand or what. But nowadays it's just better to replace the plugs. Are they oil or gas fouled?

gas fouled they do have some oil on them
