Charging system problem??
Hi Everyone,
Ok, I bought a crashed '02 954RR, front end & left side damage. I rebuilt and bike runs awesome. However, periodically it runs the battery dead and wont start. The first time this happened I replaced the battery because it was OE. The bike ran great until last weekend. I went for an extended ride and then shut her down. When I tried to restart she didn't have enough juice to start. I bumped started and got it running. FIVE minutes later the gauges went dead and then so did the engine. When I got the bike the stator cover was busted and oil had bled out. I replaced stator cover and visually checked stator but saw no damage. Should I just assume it's cracked or bad and gun one in or should I be looking elsewhere??

I am no mechanic, but it sounds similar to the problem I am in the process of repairing on my Blackbird-which appears to be the Regulator/rectifier.
One way to be sure os when you get the bike running, you can check the power coming off the batter with the meter. If it undercharging I believe it is Regulator/Rectifier, and over charging is the Stator.
Just like you, I thought my problem was an old battery. I bought a new one and everything was great for a couple of days, then my problem came back (speedo and tach dropping to zero) then barely enough juice to get the bike started later. I guess the bike runs off the battery until it dies.
My problem is that my Reg/Rect would not show the failure on constant basis.
Just a thought.
Good luck.

If you have access to the Honda Service Manual for your bike and a multimeter you can check pretty much all the electrical system components from the CDI connector. If you have the Haynes or Clymer manual you should be able to find procedures for checking each component separately. Given the cost of stators and rectifiers and whatnot a manual, multimeter and a few minutes checking are cheap. Also check the wiring from your stator on back. Since the bike slid along on that side a wire or connector might have been broken or loosened.

they are a slavage network and i am getting a reg/rec for $35+$5 ship, normally $205.

rrasco, you think i should be going after rect/reg or stator? i've already priced stator. i'm inclined to believe stator cause cover was busted when i got it. i wish i would have looked closer b4 i put new cover on. there's 3.5qts of fresh synthetic oil in there now.
