Default chain spacing

I just bought my bike and replaced the chain. I am positive that it is straight I was very adoment about it and even measured with outside calipers. My question is what should the spacing be from the edge of the tire to the chain. I may have about 1/4 inch. Thinking maybe the guy before me put on a larger tire. 1/4 inch seems close to me.

what bike do you have? easiest thing is to read the sidewall of the tire. the distance between the side of the tire and chain wouldn't really matter at this point.
