Default Chain lube

I just bought a '97 CBR600 and the chain looks like it is a greasy mess. People have tod me to use chain lube on it but I am wondering if I am just lubing the mess or is anything actually getting to the chain? What can I use to 'clean' the gunk off and re-lube it?

Use some WD-40 or kerosine and some rags to clean all the crap off the chain. A toothbrush or 'grundge brush' work very well also. Once you get it nice and clean, lube it up with some good chain lube. Everybody has their favorites.... I like the Bel Ray stuff myself... it doesn't fling off

Also make sure it has the proper amount of freeplay while you're in there
