Default CCT Woes

My bike started the infamous engine rattle, I am 90% certain after a bit of forum perusing that the cause is the CCT so my question is this:

1. I have read several posts stating that people never bothered to replace it as it will just come back in 1k miles and they never had a problem with their bike, is this true or should there be immediate concern to replace this? other than being maticulate and not being able to stand that horrible rattle.

2. Is the aftermarket APE manual cct the way to go? is it something I am going to have to constantly adjust or did honda ever release an aftermarket automatic one that will last?

Any suggestions are much appreciated,

Thanks!

Matt

i have an ape... if the noise ever does come back, you just loosen the nut and screw the bolt in a lil more.... i wouldn't say it's something that you'll have to constantly adjust....

I'm curious how many miles are on your bike M@ ? It's 2013 now so your bike is 9 years old. I'd say that the Honda manufactured part lasted a good while. Anyone who says they wear out in 1000 miles I think is elaborating just a bit.

I'm not a fan of the APE adjuster. It weeps a little bit. There is always a little oil around shaft of the adjuster because there is no way to seal it. Yes there's an O ring, but the O ring is up against a threaded shaft. Not exactly a good sealing surface. The adjustment on it is 'vague'. You adjust it until it sounds a certain way, or doesn't sound that way.

You're 90% sure it's the CCT. Is it time for the bike to have the valve clearances checked ? The sounds are similar and in the same general area.

I suspect if you put in the Honda automatic CCT, you'll never have to mess with it again. IMO naturally. Good luck.

BTW, welcome to the forum and that's a nice bike you've got there.

Thank you for the input guys,

I just rolled over 13k on the bike

I have kept a basic maintenance schedule but I have not checked anything major since I bought the bike in december and I have no clue what the prior owner had done other than a recent oil change. I bought the bike at 9k miles so I am sure its about time.

If it does end up being the CCT i'll go with the honda parts, less hassle.

my bike is an 02 F4i with about 40,000 miles. it has the oem CCT. although my bike gives a rattling noise at 5k-ish rpm, it has never given me any problems.
