Default Anti-freeze coolant

I'm in Canada so it's time to put in new antifreeze. I tested the current mix and it will only handle -10C which won't cut it.

I searched and found some lively debates but here's the rub.

The Clymer manual states:
- use pro honda hp coolant
- no silicate inhibators.
- no alchohol based antifreeze.

From the posts I heard people recomment prestone. I have a jug here and it's 'ethlylene glycol based' and it has 'long lasting inhibitors' (with no note as to what these are - reading honda's product it seems that if the inhibitors are organic based they're fine, but not if they're silicate based... prestone doesn't tell me which). The Candian tire jug I have here proudly states ' high silicate aluminum' so that's out.

So to me both brands seem dubious.

The honda store is closed at the moment... so I either wait another week or find another product more readily available. On another topic honda synth and filter are ready for my oil change...

Anyone have any suggestions?

Woot.

Hey woot, where in Canada are you? I'm in Toronto and just changed my coolant to the Prestone premixed stuff. Not sure about the silicate jargon, but the kind I got was safe for aluminum engines and what not. My buddy works as a mechanic at Cycleworld and recommended it. Says he's been using that stuff forever so I trust him.

I'm in Halifax... although I end up in Toronto or Ottawa for business usually a few times a year...

I think the prestone stuff I have is likely ok... just looking for a couple of yeses. I'll can't you as one!

Are you putting your bike in storage or are you still able to ride through the winter? I'm trying to squeeze a few more clicks in before I try and bring my bike inside my house cuz I don't have a garage.

Mine is still on the road... until it snows. I won't ride when the salts out. Otherwise I'm out in all weather. Lowest temp this year was 0 C... not bad with the right gear.

Yeah I'm on the same page with you. I got friends that won't ride anymore cuz they think it's too cold, but I'll be at it 'til the white stuff starts falling. Then it's so long bike, hello board.
