1996 900 RR Front Sprocket seems loose.....
I am so glad I found this site..I can not thank you guys enough for some of the threads I have read today regarding the front sprocket removal which would not come off without some serious Ft lbs of torque which I found out was ok even though the motor still turned over while in gear. The issue I had is ...once I removed the cover to take the front sprocket off I noticed the sprocket had a tiny bit of play even though the bolt was tight( very tight). Is that normal or is something else wrong???? I am going to change the chain and both sprockets and wonder is the 520 or 530 kits ok or should I buy the stock DID 525VM chain and metal sprockets???? The kits offer aluminum rears and I wonder how they last in relation to my OEM??? One final question...Do the Motion Pro Chain alignment tools reallly work? Waiting patiently for any help I can get

The play you noticed was probably the counter shaft play. There is a slight amount in that, even in gear. Put your bike in gear and it will roll back and forth a slight amount. Otherwise, maybe the splines were a bit worn. The sprocket should not feel "loose" when on the countershaft, either it all moves or there is something wrong. I had the kit you refer to on my 99 900RR and it worked fine. Saves a bit of rotational mass too. That's a plus. A good aluminum sprocket will last just fine. And the 520 is plenty strong for what you have. As for the alignment tools......I dont know, I've never used them, I just use a string on the front and rear tire and that works fine for me. Good luck and welcome.
