Default <8000 miles and need a new chain???

The previose owner of my 02 954 went down a tooth in the front sprocket and I think he just used the same chain and tightened it instead of getting another chain that more suits the mod. Typically you would replace the chain and sprockets at the same time, but with him going down a tooth, would I be out of line to just remove a link from the chain? Typically I would not do this, but less than 8k on the bike and the indicator shows that it needs to be replaced, but I just cleaned her up again today and the chain and sprocket seems to be fine.

Thanks,
wildcard

I'd say removing 1 link is fine, although the manufacturer may suggest against it. Make sure you get the right rivet for that type of chain and actually press the new one in to fit properly. I guess that means take out 2 links and add 1 new rivet. Rivets are usually around $10 depending on manufacturer.

I guess when I say "rivet" I really mean "connecting link". It's not the "master clip" some chains come with.
