2003 F4 engine in a 1997 f3???
Hello Everyone,
I was told that my transmission is in trouble and will need to be replaced sometime in the near future. The mechanic told me it is cheaper and easier to replace the whole motor than work on the transmission. There is a 2003 F4 engine for sale in my area for $500 obo. Would that engine fit my 1997 F3? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Don't believe it is a direct replacement. Can it be made to fit? Sure nothing is impossible, but the fact that you're talking about having a MC mechanic do all of your work means it will cost you more than having him do the transmission work would cost.
Remember, your mechanic is quoting figures based on his hourly rate - prolly $50-75 an hour. It will take him a couple of hours to drop the old, then plug in a direct replacement, yes that is much cheaper than him pulling your old motor, splitting the block, diagnosing and repairing, reassembling and reinstalling.
but - if you're mechanically inclined, break it down yourself and see what's wrong.

Thanks for the info guys. I was pretty sure it was going to be a long shot, but thought it might be worth a shot to ask. I quess I am going to ride it until it really starts messing up. Thanks again.
If your not afraid to get your hands dirty working on the transmission isn't really all that hard to do. The main thing is that you don't need a hoist or any expensive special equipment to do it. If its your second gear popping out you can get the parts for half the price of getting a $500 engine.
