Default 2000 F4i doesn't like 3rd

Got a phone call asking for help. A kid just bought a 2000 F4i and it runs great, except when you shift to 3rd. It jumps back to 2nd. Is this a transmission or clutch problem. What have you guys experienced with this? I will try to arrange a test ride so I can see what's going on in person and thought I'd pick the brains here first.

2000 would be a F4, but is he making sure he is getting it into 3rd? Mine will jump back if I pussyfoot it n dont make a firm shift into 3rd. This is like with the revs high like coming down the mtn stuck behind a car and using alot of engine brake then hittin open road. I've had it happen very rarely tho.

Thanks for the correction on my typo... I did mean F4.

I havent' seen the bike yet, so I really don't know for sure on anything.

Story goes: Kid buys it and the seller told him in need a new clutch because it doesn't shift right. If I can get to it and do a test ride, I may see a different story altogether. Just wanted to take more knowledge with me. Worn out clutch doesn't seem right to me.

Nauree, bent shift rods or forks. Speaking from experience or just offering possible cause?

bent shift forks/rods sounds like a posible too. Esp if previous owners down shifted w/o the clutch alot. Clutch should do what you described. Worn shift star could be a possible too.

Thanks for the ideas... If I do end up test riding the bike and we figure out what's wrong, I'll leave an update.
